Minit Records in-house producer/arranger and half of the duo Allen & Allen (Toussaint) Allen Orange was so impressed by Geater, that he formed his own House Of Orange label. Davis’ affection for Bobby Bland is overtly apparent in his throaty delivery, though the album’s slightly unrefined production and killer guitar flourishes add a distinct dimension that provides the listener with somethin’ a bit out o’ the norm.

…Now kick it with the sultry sweet sounds of LOVE!

Its Hollywood CA based label Rama Rama Records was founded in 1969 by record producer/publisher & songwriter Hy Mizrahi, who also established the psych/pop/soul labels Karma Sutra, Buddah, and short-lived Remember Records. Some say Buck Ram of The Platters was also affiliated with the label thus given its namesake Rama Rama. I couldn’t find jack about the (Florida-based) band Year 2000 other than our single here and a full length album from 1969 called, A Musical Odyssey which had small regional success with their tune “Pop Goes The Weasel”. They dissolved later that same year. “Spooky” is a SERIOUS slow-burner that drags one foot in soul, the other in pop. The deep haunting organ swirls effectively around a simple beat and scratchy guitar while the singer drools his BEST Lou Rawls - interrupted with hep grunts & squeals that nearly border on Tom Jones! Surely sultry enough to make any 60+ year ol’ couple HOT under the collar. …Feel like gettin’ some?

They gigged often enough to build a decent local following which entitled ‘em to play with well known touring punk acts like D.O.A., Black Flag, even Ultravox. Their original drummer was a sweet li’l sugar-puff named Eldon Hoke who would later don the [luv-]handle El Duce for his “hardcore” act, The Mentors! They eventually ended up taking L.A. as home base where they nestled quite nicely with that late-70’s extensive underground scene (sharing bills with Red Cross, The Bags, Germs, Fear, Plugz, and so on). Before disbanding in 1980, they released only 2 singles, “Peasant/Slave” in ‘78 and “Snaps” in ‘79. “Snaps” is a swift punchy knee-jerker that still fits well among the other kick-ass punk hits of that era and could easily get snagged for some future “KBD” collection… if it hasn’t already.

The urgency and anger comes across in full effect with venomous lyrics set to gnashing vocals, a murky organ & stinging electric guitar. At times their southern “charm” resembles (especially on this 1st self-released 4-song 7” from 1968) the 13 Floor Elevators and other like-minded ’60s brethren. The song “What Ever Happened To Baby Gessus” is supposedly a TRUE story of a narc agent named Baby Gessus and his drift to the vigilante dark side. Nothin’ sweet & purdy here, just sincerely deep and HEAVY psych-rawk from hip American Sioux Indians tellin’ it like it is!

Both songs on this early 1967 Whit label release are set to a slow stroll that touch on the blues yet stew 100% soul when left to Bobby’s southern sentimental drawl. The smoldering female backing vox and nicely plucked guitar are nudged up front which gives the tunes a raw swagger that sound a bit like Bo Diddley’s album Black Gladiator …minus the bondage gear. “Thank You” was issued again in 1973 on Excello with a different flipside, his 1965 hit “C.C. Rider”.

Granted The Strychnines are an on again/off again proposition, but no matter what Rockin’ Rod steps his well-tattered beatle boots in… it’ll have his one-of-a-kind, sincere, grey charm. The consistent (ahem) “looseness” in his “style” can be perceived as amateurish, but if omitted the recordings could come across as just typical garage rehash. What ya get here is 1000% of a very passionate man, attempting to survive in his isolated surroundings by reaching out with every ounce of talent he has… and I DIG that!

The tracks are culled from his 1972 album “Portrait Of A Man And His Woman” AND the seriously hard-to-get “Lawdy Miss Clawdy”, which makes me think they just might have “borrowed” the cuts, if ya know what I mean. The songs are not what you’d expect from Hawkins… heading more in ’70s rock territory with enough wah-wah & wacka-wacka string slingin’ to squeeze into ‘bout any blaxploitation soundtrack. Don’t get me wrong, there’s still Screamin’ Jay’s trademark inflections & tirades… it’s just given a good dose o’ semi stoned-out 1970s swagger!

Melbourne Australia’s Sick Things were that area’s bloodbrother to our Germs or Black Flag. Urgent, desperate, NO-holds-barred, in-yer-friggin’-face muSICK that rivaled nearly ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that was happenin’ during the crossover period between punk to hardcore. Supposedly all the “tunes” on this son-uva-biznitch were recorded during 1980 & ‘81 on a reel to reel or some shitty cassette player in various household kitchens, bedrooms, even parties; and from the sonic fidelity o’ this bastard, it’s all that was needed. Not since the Mean Red Spiders single have I heard such vile, angst & energy. Its sound quality is pure punk PERFECTION! This 1989 posthumous collection from Australia’s Shock Records contains their 1985 “Committed To Suicide” 7” along with MANY glorious unreleased tracks. The most famous face to emerge from the band was Mick Turner, who would also form the very twisted & nearly explosive Fungus Brains and the much more popular, Dirty Three.
